A little over six years ago, Kate and Doug Clendon took in a dog with a broken leg, but that’s just where their journey started…
The New Zealand couple cared for the pup in their house, got it veterinary help, and returned it to the community it called home. But when word spread of their selfless deed, more dogs came to their doorstep and the need for a more permanent solution arose.
That’s when they decided to devote their lives to rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming poor dogs in Nepal. Community Dog Welfare Kopan was born.
Kate and Doug Clendon wanted to help as many dogs as they could, so they built a shelter next to their house in Kathmandu.
Though Nepalese people believe it’s important to care for not only their dogs but those of the community, the country is incredibly poor.
So when the shelter opened, the kennels were quickly filled with pups in need of food and medical care.
The small team at the shelter works day and night to help treat all kinds of ailments — from broken limbs to tapeworms and cancerous tumors.
They also work with the community on bigger events to distribute vaccines and spay and neuter animals.
While funds have always been a little tight, as is true of most rescue shelters in the world, things were only made worse on April 25, 2015…a 7.8-magnitude earthquake hit the region.
Now more than ever, the people of Kathmandu call on the shelter for help treating lost, injured, and starving dogs.
The dogs (and the locals) are ever grateful for all the aid.

If you’d like to contribute to this amazingly worthy cause, every bit counts. There are plenty of ways to get involved. While every community should be so lucky to have kind people like Kate and her husband, it’s struggling countries and cities like Kathmandu and Nepal that really benefit from their good nature.
